225 players were selected in the 2024 NHL Draft and another 225 will be selected in 2025. About 20-25% of these drafts will be developed in Europe leaving 75-80% to be developed in North America. The open question is, will these players be developed in the NCAA or CHL before turning professional?
Currently we are tracking the 225 players from the 2024 NHL Draft Class, plus the highest rated 105 North American skaters/goaltenders from NHL Central Scouting. When the 2025 NHL draft is completed, we will replace the 105 with the actual drafted players and then track the following;
Does the CHL or NCAA have the most NHL Entry-Level Contract (ELC) signings?
What development leagues (CHL, NCAA, USHL) will players migrate to for 2025-2026?
The current ELC signing results of the 2024 NHL draftees are:
35 will advance to NHL/AHL from CHL
31 will Advance to NHL/AHL from Europe
2 will Advance to NHL/AHL from NCAA
Where are the 124 North American skaters (2024 NHL Drafts who have not signed ELC’s) and 105 Top North American rated skaters for the 2025 NHL Draft playing in North America in 2024-2025?
CHL: 140
NCAA: 43
USHL: 41
HS 4
BCHL 1
With the new NCAA rules allowing CHL players to play in the NCAA, all 229 of these players are “free agents” and can play in the CHL or NCAA next year. Will the CHL or NCAA win these player’s rights and recruiting war for the future of the NHL development?
For the 2024 and 2025 NHL Drafted players, what does the NCAA need to do just to break even with the CHL in ELC signings?
Hold onto their current 43 players
Keep their commits in the USHL, HS and BCHL
Convince 36 CHL players to come to the NCAA
Let recruiting begin.
